Welcome to 7th Grade!

My name is Mrs. Maltes, and I teach English Language Arts (ELA), and Social Studies.

Seventh grade is an exciting year filled with new opportunities and responsibilities. Students will experience a more independent middle school environment as they transition between classes, change for PE, and develop important organizational and time-management skills. Throughout the year, I look forward to helping students grow as readers, writers, critical thinkers, and responsible young adults while creating a positive and supportive classroom community.

ELA Novel Studies:

Our first novel study of the year will be The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. Students who enjoy working ahead or who benefit from having extra time to read are encouraged to obtain their own copy before we begin the unit. Getting a head start can help students feel more confident and prepared as we read and discuss the novel together in class. This is completely optional, as all students will be provided with a class copy during instruction.

Below is a list of the novels we plan to read throughout the school year. Families who wish to plan ahead may also choose to obtain copies of these books.

• The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton

If your student benefits from listening while reading, YouTube can also be a helpful resource for audiobook versions of many of these novels. Listening along while following the text can support reading comprehension and build confidence for many students.
